The Myths vs. Facts
Myth #1:
-
Climate Change Is a Future Problem
Fact:
-
Scientists have known about climate change as early as the 19th century. This means we have had plenty of time to work on correcting our mistakes. However, we are now at a point where we have roughly 12 years or less to make a positive impact on the ways we address climate change in order to not have damage to our earth and atmosphere that cannot be undone (WWF).
Myth #2:
-
Animals Will Learn To Adapt to Climate Change
Fact:
-
Plants and animals have only a few options when it comes to climate change, they can either move or adapt. While there have been previous examples of different species adapting themselves over the years in order to continue to survive climate change, the speed at which climate change is happening on a global scale makes it near impossible if not impossible for many species which we know and love to adapt to their new environment or atmosphere (WWF).
Myth #3:
-
Renewable Energy = More Money
Fact:
-
A common misconception is that renewable energy is an expensive endeavor. However, oftentimes solar power and wind power are cheaper alternatives to the use of natural gas, coal, and oil. It is estimated that the US will spend 10 times more on fossil fuel than other renewable energy sources (WWF).
Myth #4:
-
Winters Have Been Colder
Fact:
-
While there may have been single moments of a cold spell during winter, this does not indicate a major shift in the overall temperature that we experience during winter. The matter of fact is that winter temperatures have been increasing since 1896 (Wang and Oppenheimer).
Myth #5:
-
Climate Change Isn’t Harmful Because It Is Natural
Fact:
-
No scientist will argue that climate change isn’t natural but they will argue that it is in fact detrimental to our environment, especially the recent changes. There has been a spike in heat that is not caused by the sun or other natural changes. Instead, there has been a 10x increase in the amount of heat that is produced which is too high to be a natural occurrence (Berardelli).
Myth #6:
-
The Carbon Dioxide Levels Are Too Miniscule to Make An Impact
Fact:
-
Carbon Dioxide does in fact only make up a tenth of the atmosphere, however, this gas has the ability to trap heat within the Earth’s atmosphere thus making a big impact on Climate Change (Berardelli).
Myth #7:
-
Climate Change and Increased Carbon Dioxide Would Be Beneficial
Fact:
-
People believe that through climate change, we would have a decrease in cold-related deaths as well as healthier plants. However, while there might be some small areas that would be benefited, more places would experience catastrophic events. These events can include heat waves, floods, droughts, forest fires, and the extension of species that we know and love. (Wang and Oppenheimer).
Myth #8:
-
Humans Have No Control Over The Environment
Fact:
-
Humans have more control over what happens in the environment contrary to popular belief (Wang and Oppenheimer). Check out the easy ways you can change your lifestyle to help combat the effects of climate change located on our website.
Myth #9:
-
Scientists Do Not Agree On What Caused Climate Change
Fact:
-
NASA published that 97% of Climate Scientists believe that climate change and the increased heat produced are most likely caused by human activities. Within the science community, there is little to no debate about this concept of what is causing climate change however 1 in 5 Americans believes that there is an ongoing argument about the actual cause of climate change (Berardelli).
Myth #10:
-
In Order To Entirely Fix Climate Change, We Have To Get Rid Of Humans
Fact:
-
While some may argue that we, as humans, have gone too far and we will no longer be able to make a sustainable difference when it comes to combating the ill-effects of climate change, that is simply not true. We can encourage others, such as our businessmen and businesswomen as well as politicians to make a change. Our goal should be to build a world where people and nature are able to thrive while not working to hinder each other (WWF).
